- Nutrition delivery for fetus
- Produce protein and steroid hormones that help maintain the pregnancy and pave way for delivery of baby
Hormone: Human chrionic gonadtropin
- Produced by developing embryo and fetal part of the placenta
- Stimulates ovaries to continue producing estrogen and progesterone so that lining of uterus is not sloughed off in menses
- Third month of pregnancy, placenta assumes job of estrogen and progesterone and ovaries become inactive
- Prepare breasts for milk
- Another form of placentin : Relaxin which causes mother’s pelvic ligaments and public symphisis to release and become flexible which eases birth passage.
